What’s new around here

Clements Library Centennial

The Clements Library is marking its centennial year with a logo I designed (shown on an outdoor banner) referencing the historic building’s facade and its academic focus on 18th- and 19th-century American manuscripts. Additionally I redesigned the institution’s scholarly journal, The Quarto, and developed a gallery guide for their year-long centennial exhibition.

100 Years in the Making

I was pleased to learn the centennial issue of the University of Michigan’s School of Education Magazine won a silver Addy Award from the American Advertising Federation. Shown to my left are magazine co-designer Don Hammond, writer Jeanne Hodesh, and director of communications Danielle Dimcheff. (Scroll down to view the magazine posting)

Cookbook Cameo

An eagle-eyed friend was watching the FX television series The Bear recently and spotted a cookbook I’d designed years ago in the main character’s library. The screenshot below represents Mainstreet Ventures Distinctive Recipes three seconds of fame in episode 8. The series revolves around a renowned chef who returns to Chicago after inheriting his brother’s Italian beef restaurant.

Delta 5K

I recently developed the visual identity for the Delta Scholarship Fund's annual 5K Run held in Atlanta—and virtually worldwide—in June. The modular logo, meant to suggest airport iconography, was adapted to t-shirts, race bibs, even the lanyards and medals awarded at the finish line.

Frankel Institute Annual 2021

This is my fifth year designing the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies Annual, a collection of essays written by their visiting Fellows over the previous academic year. The common topic for the recently printed, 60-page publication was “translation.”

Michigan Education

I teamed up with designer Don Hammond (Hammond Design) to produce a special issue of the University of Michigan School of Education magazine. This 68-page expanded issue was a nostalgic look back—as well as a look at what’s ahead—following the school’s centennial year.

Bedard in the Back Yard

Kinda happy with a quick cartoon I did for an upcoming backyard concert featuring Ann Arbor rockabilly guitar hero George Bedard.

Bernie’s Brandy

Bernie Rink, the curmudgeonly godfather of the northern Michigan wine industry, always wanted a brandy made from his vineyard’s grapes. When he died in 2018, his son approached the Northern Latitudes Distillery in Lake Leelanau, Michigan, to fulfill his wish. I designed the brandy’s label using a photo of Bernie in his signature flannel shirt, suspenders, and judgmental gaze.

Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts

I just completed another edition of the DIA Bulletin, the museum’s annual scholarly journal. The varied topics in this 100-page issue range from illustrated Indian poetry to Italian sculpture to colonial New England silversmithing.

Writing in Time: Emily Dickinson’s Master Hours

Designed for Amherst College Press, this 126-page, 11x11 inch softcover book offers an in-depth examination of Emily Dickinson’s mysterious “Master” letters of the mid 1800s. Actual-size reproductions, detailed transcriptions, analysis of handwriting, and gate-fold timelines attempt to place these important letters within the larger context of Dickinson’s work.
